Town Hall - 100 Years of Women's Right to Vote, a discussion of Women in Politics

17 days until event begins

What you will learn

“There never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers.”
- Susan B. Anthony

Even before Jeannette Rankin (R-MT) came to DC in 1917 to serve as the first female member of the House of Representatives, women had a robust presence in public policy in the United States.

Abigail Adams and Martha Washington helped shape the American presidency. Phillis Wheatley, a freed slave, wrote poems that turned the tide toward independence. At just 16 years old, Sybil Ludington outrode Paul Revere to alert the colonials the British were coming. Deborah Sampson was given military honors when it was discovered that she was fighting incognito alongside the Revolutionary War Forces. Mercy Otis Warren accurately recorded the history of the early country so it would not be forgotten.

Later, leaders like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Alice Paul, Carrie Chapman Catt, and Lucy Stone started organizations and led the Silent Sentinels activists in a grassroots effort to recognize women's right to vote. On August 26th, 1920, a package containing the certified record of Tennessee's ratification of the 19th Amendment arrived in DC and was delivered tot he Secretary of State. At 8 AM, with two-thirds of the states ratifying it, the 19th Amendment was signed into the Constitution. Women were guaranteed the right to vote.

Join the Leadership Institute and an all-star panel of our faculty, graduates, and former staffers as we discuss women's roles in politics, women's impact, and how conservative women can be more effective at being heard. Let's celebrate 100 years of the right to vote by winning that vote!
